ans of the epic fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire, were given an unexpected gift this holiday season. Author George RR Martin has released a full chapter from the not yet published book, The Winds of Winter, the sixth installment in the series.
The most recent book in the series, A Dance with Dragons, was released less than six months ago and made record sales; having broken the record for the highest first day record sales for new fiction published this year.
The chapter was released Wednesday on George RR Martin's official site, reports MTV Geek. According to Martin's LiveJournal, Not a Blog, there will be another chapter released in the paperback version of A Dance with Dragons, which Martin also announced is slated for release next July.
For those who have caught up on Martin's saga, the chapter released is at the beginning of The Winds of Winter, though the events take place before the conclusion of A Dance with Dragons, which Martin admits is 'tricky'.
The series provides the foundation behind the hit HBO series, Game of Thrones, which received 13 Emmy nominations for the first season and has seen its viewer ship expand. The second season, which is set to air in April, is based on the second book, A Clash of Kings. It is reported that each season of the show will be dedicated to a single book in the series.
The first book in the series, A Game of Thrones, was published in 1996. The second book, A Clash of Kings, was published in 1998, followed by A Storm of Swords in 2000. Five years later, he released A Feast for Crows. After a six year absence, Martin published A Dance with Dragons. Each book approaches, or surpasses 1000 pages each.
As of yet, there is no release date for The Winds of Winter. There are seven books planned in the series, culminating with A Dream of Spring.
